One of the students in my class recently left the school to move to Washington. I did a lesson with my students to teach them fun facts about Washington and I compared Washington to Arizona. After this the students and I learned about the different parts of a friendly letter. We then wrote letters using our new knowledge on Washington to our friend. The students then revised their letters and made final copies. In this lesson students were able to write a real letter that was actually mailed to their friend. Also they learned about a new state with incorporated Social Studies into and ELA lesson.
Also through Time For Kids, we were able to read about different cultures and even learn about different perspectives in the United States. One of the articles I read with the students had to about what it means to be a good citizen. It got them thinking about social implications of being a good citizen in the United States and how, even as 4th graders, they can also be informed citizens. Other articles included saving rhinos in Africa and also how woman aren't able to get an education in many third world countries. All of these articles led to great group discussions about what they can do to make a difference and help out. Also, Time For Kids tends to hit many Social Studies concepts.

Throughout the year my students have been using Simple Solutions. Each day they go through 15 problems and answer them. We then go up to the front of the board and go over each problem together. At the end of each week we have a test that are similar to the questions that we went over during the course of the week. After doing this for awhile I came up with a new idea. On Monday, after the tests have been graded, we give the tests back to the students for them to review and correct for homework. Students bring back their exams by Wednesday with their corrections for homework. This way students are actually looking into what they did incorrectly and making an effort to fix them. I give them feedback throughout the lesson and on their exams to fix. Students are also assessed on weekly readings based out of the Hartcourt books. These assessments are to see if students understand the vocabulary that is with the story and the context of the story. The answer multiple choice and short answer questions.
I am able to give the students feedback in class and on their work. During tests many students come up to me and ask for help. As I am going through problems I try to remind them that they are doing well or if they are wrong that they are on the right track and to keep thinking about it. These little bits of encouragement help them through their tests. Also, I help revise writing for the students. I go through and make corrections based on grammar and spelling.
